What a cookie is
A cookie is a small piece of text a website asks your browser to store and send back on later requests, which lets it recognise the same browser from one page to the next. Cookies are how sites keep you signed in, remember a basket, or — when set by a third party — follow a browser between websites for analytics or advertising.
This site sets none
crestspace.online sets no cookies of its own, and permits no third party to set a cookie through it. To be specific, this site carries:
- no analytics of any kind, first-party or third-party;
- no advertising tag, conversion pixel or retargeting code;
- no A/B testing or personalisation tool;
- no social media buttons, embedded posts, embedded video or comment system;
- no chat widget;
- no session identifier, because there is nothing on this site to have a session with.
No cookie is named in this policy because there is none to name. A policy listing cookies a site does not set is worse than useless; this one describes what the site does.
Why there is no consent banner
Consent banners exist to obtain permission before non-essential cookies are set. Since this site sets no cookies at all, there is nothing to obtain permission for, and a banner announcing “we use cookies” would be a false statement about this site. The absence of a banner here is the accurate outcome, not an oversight.
What happens instead
Two things occur when you load a page here, and neither involves a cookie.
Ordinary server logs. The hosting provider’s web server records each request: IP address, user agent string, URL requested, referring URL where one is sent, and timestamp. This is standard server behaviour rather than tracking — the entries are used for security and diagnostics, retained for 30 days, and linked to no identifier connecting one visit to another. The privacy policy has the detail, including cross-border disclosure.
A font request to Google. The two typefaces used in this site’s design are served by Google Fonts. Your browser therefore requests those font files from Google’s servers when a page loads, and Google receives your IP address and user agent in order to send the files. No cookie is set by that request. Google’s handling of the information is governed by its privacy policy. If you prefer not to make that request at all, blocking the domain fonts.googleapis.com in your browser or an extension will cause the site to fall back to the fonts already on your computer, and nothing else about it changes.
Browser storage and fingerprinting
This site does not use localStorage, sessionStorage or IndexedDB. Nothing is written to your browser and nothing is read back from it. The only JavaScript on the site is a single first-party file that operates the navigation menu; it is unminified and readable at /assets/main.js if you would like to check.
No fingerprinting is performed: no canvas, audio or font enumeration, no measurement of your screen, hardware or plugins, and no attempt to derive a persistent identifier from your browser.
Controlling cookies in your browser anyway
Although this site gives your browser nothing to store, you may want to manage cookies from sites that do. Every major browser offers this in its settings, usually under a privacy or site-data heading: blocking third-party cookies by default, blocking all cookies for a particular site, clearing what is already stored, and reviewing what a site has set. Menu names differ between Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge and change with new versions, so the browser’s own help pages are the reliable reference. Blocking cookies broadly can break sites that rely on them for signing in, but will have no effect at all on this one.
If this ever changes
This is a commitment rather than a statement of current practice: if cookies or any other form of tracking are introduced to this site in future, this page will be updated to describe them accurately, and a working consent mechanism will be in place before any non-essential cookie is set — not afterwards, and not in a later release. Any such change would also be reflected in the privacy policy. No change of this kind is planned.
Questions
If you believe something on this site is setting a cookie or storing data in your browser, that would be a defect and the publisher would want to know. Write to info@crestspace.online with the page address and what you observed.
